ServiceM8 gives solo operators a genuinely free plan up to 30 jobs per month. That is not a stripped down demo. You get scheduling, invoicing, job forms, GPS check-in, photo capture, and payment processing. Everything runs from your phone, which is where a solo handyman lives anyway.
If you go over 30 jobs in a month, the paid plan is $29/month. At that point you are probably busy enough to afford it. But the free tier is real and plenty of handymen never leave it.
FieldVibe strips scheduling down to the bones. You open the app, add a job with client name, address, date, and notes, and you are done. It sends text reminders to your customers from your own phone number, which means they see your name, not some automated system.
It is completely free for solo operators with unlimited jobs and unlimited clients. The tradeoff is that it does not do invoicing or payments. You are just scheduling and tracking jobs. If you already have a separate way to bill (QuickBooks, Square, or just writing an invoice in Google Docs), FieldVibe is the scheduling layer you add on top.
Square Appointments is free for solo operators and gives you something the others do not: a public booking page your customers can use to schedule themselves. You set your availability, share the link, and jobs book themselves. That alone can save a few hours a week of back and forth texts to find a time.
The built-in payment processing is a bonus. Customers pay through Square's card reader or the booking page, and the money lands in your bank next day. You pay the standard Square processing fee (2.6% plus 10 cents per transaction), but the scheduling software itself costs nothing.
